Dear Mothers,
I have been thinking about us all. After listening to my pastor’s message Sunday, I came away grieved at the burdens we mothers sometimes carry that we are not meant to carry. We are not made to carry. We were not created to carry. Especially with adult children.

You mothers of adult children know what I am talking about. Our children have their own path to follow, as my adult child says of her adult children. But, we as mothers naturally want to go before them and clear the way, remove the obstacles, or at least, get them to do it our way. And it that, we pick up burdens we were not made to bear.

We are not ultimately responsible for them; God is. God gave them to us to steward for a few years, but they have always been His. In Ezekiel 18:4, God says: “Behold, all souls are Mine.” The ones who follow Christ and the ones who don’t.

Peter said we are to cast all our anxieties or burdens on Jesus, because He cares for us (1 Peter 5:7). And how do we do that? This is where my pastor’s message comes in.

Philippians 4: 6-7: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Dear Sister, unload that burden!

Lay it down!

Cast it to Jesus.

You weren’t meant to carry it. It is the Lord’s. With a thankful heart in prayer cast your burdens upon the Lord, because He cares for you. And ask Him for that peace that surpasses your ability to describe or understand it.

You may have to do this over and over as the years go by, but that’s okay. Jesus understands. He’s got you … and your kid.

Now, may I say a word to those mothers who haven’t a clue as to what I am talking about, because you have perfect children who never cause you any grief? Good for you. Rejoice!
